This past November, Mel had the privilege of presenting at the Resilient Homes Seminar, hosted by the City of Charlottetown at the Learning Library. It was an opportunity to share insights from the climate resilience research she’s been conducting in partnership with Holland College – work that sits at the heart of what we do at Black Cat Woodcraft.

Climate change isn’t just about rising temperatures; it’s about the extreme weather events that are increasingly affecting our Island homes. From intense rainfall and flooding to high winds and ice storms, our heritage buildings face unique challenges that require thoughtful, practical solutions.

During the seminar, Mel presented actionable tips that homeowners can implement to better prepare their properties for these weather events. The research we’re doing with Holland College focuses on balancing historical preservation with climate adaptation – ensuring that our cherished heritage buildings can withstand the challenges ahead while maintaining their character and integrity.

Whether you own a heritage property or simply want to make your home more resilient, understanding these vulnerabilities is the first step toward protection. We’re grateful to the City of Charlottetown for creating this platform to share knowledge and help our community build resilience, one home at a time.
