One of the most rewarding parts of being a woman in trades is doing work to promote, encourage, and create a welcoming community that invites more gender diversity into the industry. This past December, I had the privilege of speaking at a Trade HERizons panel organized by Women's Network PEI.

The event brought together folks interested in pursuing new careers in the trades, and I was honoured to share my journey as both a carpenter and entrepreneur. We talked about the challenges, the triumphs, and everything in between – from learning to trust your skills to building a business that reflects your values.
Why Representation Matters
When I started out, seeing other women in carpentry wasn't common. But every time someone sees a woman wielding a circular saw or running her own woodworking business, it opens up possibilities. It says, "You belong here too."
Trade HERizons creates exactly that kind of space – where questions are welcome, experiences are shared, and the path forward feels a little less intimidating. Whether you're considering a complete career change or just curious about what it's like to work with your hands, events like these remind us that the trades need diverse voices, perspectives, and skills.
Looking Forward
To everyone who attended and asked thoughtful questions: thank you for your curiosity and courage. To those considering a trade: the industry needs you. Your unique perspective, problem-solving approach, and craftsmanship will make it stronger.
And to the Women's Network PEI: thank you for creating these opportunities to connect, inspire, and build a more inclusive trades community right here on the Island.
